History

The construction of a new basilica in Russian style will be finalized by the end of the year in Plovdiv. The history behind this newly built church lies in a coincidence – Kiril Vassilev (the owner of Helios Metal Center) was fascinated by the temple of Saint Nikolay the Wonderworker, which he saw during a business trip in the Ukrainian city Nikolaev. From this moment on, Mr Vassilev felt a strong urge to create a reproduction of this church in Plovdiv. The plot for the construction was granted by the municipality of Plovdiv, district Zapaden (West). The groundbreaking took place on 1 December 2010 and the actual building works started few months later on 4 July 2011. Mr Ilko Nikolov designed the architectural plan, while His Eminence the Metropolitan of Plovdiv Nikolay gave his blessing and supervises the project. It is important to mention that the replica in Plovdiv is going to be as twice as big as the original Saint Nikolay temple in Nikolaev (around 180 sq. m).

The donator wishes to complete the construction of the church by the autumn of 2014, so that a Divine Liturgy would be celebrated on the official holiday of Saint Nikolay (6 December 2014).
